The man whose singing style has been compared to Mohammed Rafi himself, Sonu Nigam was once the highest paid singer in India. The singer has released several pop albums including songs in languages other than Hindi like Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Marathi, Odia and various other languages. The singer has even enthralled his fans with his voice in live concerts in countries in North America, Europe, Australia, Aftrica and the Middle East. Apart from his singing, the actor has enjoyed some roles as an actor and even lent his voice for the translated version of Aladdin released in India.
Life in Music
The artist began singing as a four year old. He performed with his father at weddings and parties as a child. When he turned 18, the singer moved to Mumbai with his father to find something for himself in Bollywood. There the young singer was trained by the acclaimed classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
The first song he sang as a playback singer in 1990 for Bollywood never actually released. After two years of performing for radio commercials, he found his first official Bollywood song with O Aasman Wale (from the movie Aaja Meri Jaan).
He gained the recognition of music fans after he sang popular numbers like Sandese Aate Hai (Border) and Yeh Dil Deewana (Pardes). Not only did he sing in multiple Indian languages, the artist even released pop albums in regional languages like Hindi, Kannada, Odia, Chhattisgarhi and Punjabi.
The singer has even shown his skills in working with music as a composer. He composed the title track for Singh Saab The Great and music for films like Sooper Se Ooper and Jal in collaboration with percussionist Bikram Ghosh.
Apart from his concerts abroad, Sonu Nigam has even toured the UK with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as a tribute to Rafi.
His tribute to the pop legend Michael Jackson was included in the album The Beat of Our Hearts.
Over the years he has recorded songs that work with a variety of genres. He has also worked in development of devotional albums for Hindu, Islam and Buddhism. Gifted with the complete package and a personality that can keep an audience entertained in any kind of event, he has also hosted various singing contests.
In Bollywood, he is not only regarded for his voice but for his acting skills too. Films like Kaamchor, Ustaadi Ustaad Se, Betaab, Taqdeer, Krishna Krishna, Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani etc. have showcased his acting skills on the big screen.
His most popular appearance on small screen was his stint as a judge in Indian Idol.
Sonu's talents have been showcased outside India too as he has also performed live in USA and UK along with his counterparts as parts of different tours in 2009 and 2010. He has also collaborated on projects with Britney Spears and Avicii.
