What is Terrametric?

The word Terra-metric comes from the words Terra and Parametric. Terra refers to the earth and land whereas parametric refers to the process of algorithmic thinking in design. The terrametric workshop aims to combine these two to create something meaningful and sustainable for the 21st ce.

Parametric Design

Computational design and Parametric tools have become an important part of the design process and it will eventually be inseparable from the process if one desires speedy dividends and workflow.

The missing Link

Can the future be all about emerging tools and yet be eco-sensitive? The role of the designers in today transcends the juxtaposition of the aesthetic and functionality. We will be exploring this aspect in the form of a functional art installation that will be ideated, optimised and fabricated by the participants.

Your Role

The aim of the workshop is to take the digital models into the real world. While we will be using emerging computational tools for design, we will be manifesting ideas using earth and other natural materials like steel or bamboo.

What to Expect from the Workshop?

Understanding a complete work-flow - Learn step by step how to actually build something from the Ideation stage.

Computational Design Softwares and Plug-ins - Lectures and guided sessions on understanding the process and concepts of computational design.

Advance Fabrication - Explore cutting edge fabrication technologies like laser cutting, CNC cutting for rapid prototyping.

Innovative use of Sustainable materials - Implement the use of vernacular materials in complex parametric forms.

Understand the logic of computation - Crack the logics that govern computation design methods through lectures and hands-on work.

Add to Portfolio - Final design output from the design problem will be a good addition to your portfolio.

How do I know if this workshop is for me?

You know this workshop is for you if you are:

  • Computational Design Enthusiast
  • Undergraduate Students in Design/Architecture
  • Post-grad students
  • Professionals

Who is the lead mentor for the Terrametric Workshop?

Ar. Monish Siripurapu is the founder Principal of Ant Studio, Delhi. A receiver of the JN Tata Scholarship he has done masters in Robotic Fabrication from IAAC, Spain. Ant Studio is a futuristic human-robot interaction setup which intends to bring together artistic intuition and logical thinking together to aid achievement. Monish Siripurapu aims to foster experimentation, by practising a hands-on approach in design and innovation.

The highlight of the workshop will be the challenging and interactive hands-on Fabrication and design of a large scale pavilion using vernacular materials.

What are the learnings I shall walk away with?

  • Confidence to experiment forms
  • Understanding the workflow of the computational process.
  • Hands on Experience in parametric Pavilion fabrication
