The Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, St. John's Medical College hospital and the KIARA music academy welcome you to the fundraiser The Glory of Christmas an evocative musical based on the story behind Christmas, presented by the KIARA music academy, directed by Ms. Wendy Dickson. This event is part of an effort dedicated to raising funds for needy children with blood disorders requiringBone Marrow transplantation.
The Cause: Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation
Bone Marrow Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a life-saving procedure for a number of blood diseases, cancer, and disorders of the immune system. The goal of HSCT is to replace a child's diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. Bone marrow is the spongy material in the center of the bones that makes all types of blood cells, including young blood cells called stem cells. In the transplant procedure, the patient receives blood-producing cells (also called blood-producing stem cells) which grow in the body giving rise to healthy blood and a new immune system. HSCTs are of two types Autologous and Allogeneic.
Autologous HSCT is where blood-producing stem cells are collected from the patient and given back to the patient. This procedure is part of the treatment of some difficult to cure cancers in children. Allogeneic HSCT is where blood-producing stem cells are collected from a healthy matched donor and given to the patient. Allogeneic HSCT helps provide a new healthy blood-producing and immune system to the patient.
