Using stories from our every day lives that we dont have the time to stop and think about, the piece is an attempt to reflect on the mundane, which could actually teach us about being human. Ordinary thoughts that make extraordinary changes for our being. The name is in reference to the old Zen saying May we exist in muddy water with purity, like a lotus.
We urban lot are existing alright, but are marred by the toxins of modern decadence, like the Black Lotus. The story is about us. The production will also see the artist playing a variety of instruments like Kalimba, Jembe, Flute & Ukelele for each other as they dance and act.
Kavya is a movement artist, choreographer, Bellydance teacher, and director who facilitates her work through Martiya Dance Community. She also freelances and collaborates with artists in the city and from other parts of the world. Dance her also taken her outside of the country where she trained in Bellydance, Flamenco and various other gypsy & folk dances of North Africa. Locally Kavya is extensively trained and experienced in contemporary dance techniques, Jazz, Yoga, Ballet & Dance Fitness.
All the experiences and her interest in creative writing, research and reading habits, private activism, mystic practices, interest in art and architecture reflect in her work. She is also a self-taught musician who plays often uses live music as accompaniment in her classes and workshops.
About The Dance Company:
Martiya Dance Community is a dance & movement exploration community from Bangalore facilitated by Kavya Viswanathan, through her experience in dance & physical theatre. Martiya came to be in 2012 and since then with every production, this being the 7th, the company has strived to fine tune the art of storytelling be it through body, music or body.
What started as a belly dance school with a decade of experience in women's wellness through dance is now also a safe ground for women to understand their deeper selves. This exploration has been the core of the Martiyas creative work for Black Lotus
