Artist Bio

Artist Bio

Archana Kumar is an independent experimental performance artist, driven by everything that she experiences around her, prefers to speak of the uncomfortable truths. As a woman performer, her solo projects reflect issues related with the gender crisis, inequalities of genders and their biases. They are bold, evocative and radical. During her 10 year residence in USA, she underwent extensive training in modern dance techniques, Butoh and improvisation. She is primarily trained in Kathak which she continues to teach and use as a vehicle to further understand the physical body, to develop control, discipline and balance. She led a premier Kathak school in Seattle, was adjunct faculty at Cornish College of Arts & Northwestern University, Evanston. She received the SPANDANA Award in 2011, Karnataka, India for her exceptional contribution towards spreading the knowledge of Kathak amongst the youth. Her works have travelled around USA, Canada, Japan, China and Indonesia. Her current research and fascination is understanding children and creating novel methods to deconstruct movements and accommodate dance, music and theatre in education at the grass roots level. She owes much of her Theatre experience to Hiroshi Ohashi, Tokyo working closely with him since 2005.Currently she has started teaching and introducing Flamenco to the Bangalore people through workshops, classes and performances with her new band- Alemari.
